To Do List

This is our homesteading to do list. As you can see, it’s massive. I don’t know for sure if we’ll ever finish it, but it’ll keep us working hard towards our dream!

At the bottom, I’ve added a section of things that we’re already doing to homestead which will help keep us encouraged that we’re not starting from absolute zero!

Feel free to take as many of these ideas as you’d like to start homesteading from anywhere! That’s a huge part of why I’m publishing this list online. I want others to see that there are a TON of things they can do to homestead even if they’re living in an apartment without a single square foot of earth to call their own.

Without further ado, here is our master homesteading to do list:

  • Write out exactly WHY we want to homestead
  • Make a list of everything we want to do someday
  • Start a homesteading binder
  • Create a budget (focused on saving for homesteading)
  • Get out of debt
  • Declutter the whole house
  • Start growing herbs
  • Start canning food (sauces, soups, etc.)
  • Get a first aid kit together
  • Start exercising to lose weight and get into shape
  • Start composting
  • Get craft supplies organized
  • Learn to make bread from scratch (and buy supplies to do so)
  • Gather recipes together
  • Re-do meal schedule
  • Start foraging for food
  • Make our own cleaning supplies
  • Learn to drive a manual vehicle (Melody)
  • Make tile planters for container gardening
  • Start a container garden
  • Start making our own (healthy) snacks
  • Put loom together
  • Make rugs
  • Plant sunflowers
  • Start waking up earlier (started waking up at 5am on August 13, 2018)
  • Start fermenting foods
  • Start baking Amish friendship bread
  • Make more cloth wipes
  • Start making our own bath and body products
  • Create a zero-waste plan
  • Start saving seeds
  • Organize seed collection
  • Start dehydrating foods
  • Create list of tools, etc. we need (have in homesteading binder)
  • Start a homesteading blog (You’re reading it now! Started in August, 2018)
  • Research no-electricity clothes washing options
  • Reduce screen time (get down to <5 hours per week)
  • Start drinking more tea
  • Spend more time practicing music
  • Make our own pet food
  • Set up rainwater collection (?)
  • Organize whole house
  • Create a family chore chart/cleaning schedule
  • Start making baskets
  • Start drying flowers
  • Create homeschooling plans (& binder)
  • Pack a “bug out” bag
  • Start growing our own mushrooms
  • Start making vinegar
  • Make a scrap metal recycling plan
  • Plan future home (building method, etc.)
  • Figure out how much land we’ll need in the future
  • Make fruit tree picker (made on August 14, 2018)

Some things we starting doing before making this list:

  • Use cloth diapers
  • Use cloth towels in the kitchen
  • Use cloth wipes in the bathroom
  • Dry clothes, etc. on the line rather than in a dryer
  • Eat out only once per week (or less)
  • Make food from scratch as much as possible
  • Make our own baby food
